Drywall Supplies You'll Need

You are ready to start your drywall project, but you haven’t a clue on what you need to buy or rent.  Never fear because there are some things that you can do and some drywall supplies you need to make your project much easier.  Take some time to do your research before you start haphazardly hammering up drywall sheets on the wall and ceiling!  You’ll be glad you did.

There are some basic tools that you will need for your project.  Of course, you’ll need a utility knife and a T-square.  These tools are essential for cutting your drywall sheets evenly and neatly.  Another handy tool is a drywall saw which works very much like a regular handheld saw.  You might also want a keyhole or power jig saw for cutting around any electrical boxes that you might have.  A circular cutting saw is ideal for round cuts.  A compass comes in handy for drawing any circles that you’ll need to cut.  A drywall hammer is an essential tool also so that you can do tapping and basic nailing jobs.  There are also some handy power tools, like drywall routers, that you can rent.

Drywall sheets are heavy and very hard to lift up to your ceiling.  A drywall lift will do the job for you.  With this unit, all you have to do is load a drywall sheet onto the lift and crank it up to the ceiling.  The sheet will stay in place until you nail or screw it into the ceiling.  Drywall jacks come in handy too.  They will help you keep your drywall sheets securely against the ceiling and can be made out of 2 by 4 boards.

The drywall sheets you purchase usually come in standard 4 foot sheets so that they are easily secured to an 8 foot wall.  Any additional space left over at the bottom of your wall can be hidden by baseboard.  Use your drywall lift to hold the sheets up against the wall until they are nailed or screwed on.

Additional drywall supplies that you might need are a pry bar, drywall mud, a screw gun, drywall tape, a tape measure, taping knives, a sander and a mud pan.  For finishing your ceiling, you might want to rent a sprayer to make the job look more professional.
